T hings are bigger in Texas. Big steaks, big hair, big stadiums, and big hats. These are just a few of the things the state is known for. While Trophy Trucks and off- road racers are almost unknown in Texas, that is rapidly changing. Billy Wilson, a 30-year-old from Corpus Christi, Texas set the desert racing world on its ear a few weeks ago by taking the overall win at the 30th SCORE San Felipe 250 in his new Jimco Trophy Truck. Wilson, who runs 4 Wheel Specialties when not in a race truck, got his start on dirtbikes at 9 years old and raced BMX competitively for a number of years. Wilson got his first taste of desert racing when he built his father-in-law, Wes Bevly, a Stock Full truck in which Bevly went on to win multiple SCORE championships. At many races, Bevly would rent a race truck for Wilson and the two drivers did well - winning races and class championships. The duo later formed their own team, Bevly Wilson Racing. Despite what some spectators think there is no one named Bevly Wilson; instead, the team name is the two last names of the drivers. For 2016, the team purchased a new Trophy Truck from Jimco. Wilson picked up the truck in Phoenix last December, did some shock testing in Barstow and then entered a race in Laughlin, Nevada to give the truck its initial shakedown. While the team is not tiny, it is not huge either. They typically bring 15 crew members and five chase trucks to Baja. Being based out of Texas presents logistical problems while racing and prepping the truck.
