I n the off-road world, one can't exclude Toyota's contribution of its very capable mid-sized 4x4 pickup, the Tacoma TRD Pro. This specially equipped truck is a favorite of many SCORE fans, simply because of its capabilities, and the inclusion of features that real off-road enthusiasts like and utilize. For example, not too many 4x4 pickups come equipped with optional rear locking differentials, crawl control, skid plates, and advanced multi-terrain adjustments; not to mention the title of "4x4 Of The Year." The 2016 model has all that, plus a more powerful engine in the form of a 3.5 liter V6 that produces 278 horsepower and 265 lbs. ft. of torque. Backed by a new six- speed automatic transmission the 2016 Tacoma TRD Pro is more fuel efficient than previous models too. During our test drive with a Quicksand colored Double-Cab, we averaged 17 mpg in combined highway and off-road driving conditions. Compared to the previous year's 4.0 liter V6, the new engine provided plenty of passing power and acceleration from a standing start, even though the torque figures are slightly lower. Nevertheless, once the six-speed transmission gets into overdrive, it takes some pedal effort to get it to kick into a lower gear. So the truck struggles for a few seconds, before the 3.5-liter shows off its power. SAME CHASSIS JUST TOUGHER AND SAFER While the Tacoma TRD Pro's chassis is the same design carried over from 2015, the cab has been updated to improve safety, meeting new roof-crush regulations. A comforting feeling if you're ever in an off-road situation where that could possibly happen. But considering that you're surrounded by a safer cab, airbags for the driver, passenger, and side airbag protection, the 2016 Tacoma is a pretty safe vehicle to drive in any condition. During our test-drive, the 2016 GOODYEAR ALL-TERRAIN 265/70R16 TIRES MOUNTED ON ALUMINUM WHEELS PROVIDE GOOD TRACTION OFF-ROAD, WITH A QUIET AND SMOOTH HIGHWAY RIDE. 037 SCORE JOURNAL
