The SPOT GPS device is also widely promoted by the Kurt Caselli Foundation, who make sure that motorcycle and ATV riders have safe races during SCORE events by pre-running the course and indicating where dangerous obstacles are along the route. While the Kurt Caselli Foundation does its best to work with a large group of volunteers, support vehicles and sometimes even a helicopter to spot the lead rider, one of the most important things the foundation does is to educate riders on how to simply use the SPOT GPS device. The foundation educates racers and motorcycle enthusiasts on how to use and mount the SPOT GPS device on their vehicle. The first thing they do, is to show riders how the system operates. The SPOT GPS device uses global satellite tracking technology to send a signal to the SCORE command center during a race, or to family members who can track the device's signal using the SPOT website www. findmespot.com. The SPOT GPS device on a motorcycle or ATV, needs to be mounted in a protected area. THE VARIOUS BUTTONS ON THE SPOT GPS DEVICE GIVE INDICATION TO SAFETY CREWS THE CONDITION OF THE RIDER, CHECK- IN AT VARIOUS INTERVALS, AN SOS SIGNAL, AND EVEN CUSTOM MESSAGING. The Kurt Caselli Foundation recommends mounting it onto one of the motorcycle fork tubes or the top bar clamp on the handlebar. This allows the device to get a signal, but also be readily accessible in an emergency. During SCORE Races, safety officials will also give riders a decal that visibly indicates where the SPOT GPS device is located on the vehicle. This allows anyone rendering aid to an unconscious rider, the ability to quickly find the device and activate one of the emergency buttons on it. Riders need to make sure that the green power light on the left side of the unit is on and flashing. In some instances, an accident may shut the unit off if the button gets depressed. If this is the case, the unit can simply be powered up again by pressing the button. The SPOT unit has a Hand-to- Hand button that is used in case of a life threatening emergency that requires immediate medical attention. The Hand-to-Hand button has a flap that must be opened before pressing the button to activate. Hold the button down until the green LED illuminates. During SCORE Races, the Kurt Caselli Foundation also instructs riders with a few additional tips 048 SCORE JOURNAL
