JAMES 'WHITE' BOYS' BASKETBALL TEAM captured the Catholic Athletic League's Cadet (grades 9 and 10) Division II state championship on March 5 at Mount St. Charles Academy by defeat- ing St. Peter in the title game, 61-31. To get to the finals, St. Ambrose/St. James topped St. Mary of the Bay in the semifinals, 48-43. The members of the team are, from left, coach Richard Quinn, David Bordieri, Declan Quinn, Josh Jahnz, Aaron DeSousa, Sebastian Perez, David Du, Billy Free, and coach Jim Jahnz. McGovern Brown is also a member of the team. The St. Ambrose/ St. James 'Red' boys' basketball team also reached the finals of the Cadet Division II state tournament last Saturday at Mount by defeating Holy Apostles in the semifinals, 61-58, but in the title game, the local team suffered a 74-53 loss to St. Philip. St. Ambrose/St. James boys capture CAL Cadet Division II state championship BOSTON – The Woonsocket YMCA Whalers' youth swim team saw 34 of its members contribute to their overall scoring and several others nail down personal-best times at the SENECY League Championships that took place on the weekend of March 4-6 at Boston University. The Whalers scored 973.5 points to place ninth in the team standings. As a result, the squad will be swimming up a division next season against the Smithfield YMCA Dolphins, Newport County Wahoo, YMCA Cape Cod Makos, and the MacColl Field Black Marlins. Several Whalers placed in the top 10 of their respective events, and leading the way was Lauren Mania, who accounted for 45 points by win- ning the girls' 9-10 division's 50-yard backstroke in 35.31 seconds and took second in the 100-yard individual med- ley (1:17.69), and Caroline Shen, who placed fourth in the girls' 13-14 divi- sion's 50-yard freestyle (27.15) and 100- yard freestyle (58.88) and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle (2:12.94) en route to a team-high 52 points. Jacob Parenteau also finished second in the boys' 9-10 50-yard backstroke (38.55) and 10th in the 100-yard indi- vidual medley (1:28.52). Colin Hyland placed third in the boys' 9-10 50-yard freestyle (32.24) and seventh in the 100-yard IM (1:25.42), and Hayley Abbruzzese was fourth in the girls' 8-and-under 50-yard freestyle (38.91) and seventh in the 25-yard breaststroke (24.23). In the boys' 11-12 division, the Whalers received plenty of scoring from Nicholas Zerva, who was sec- ond in the 200-yard freestyle (2:10.97) and seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (1:00.88), Kyle Crossley, who finished sixth in the 50-yard backstroke (34.39) and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (30.03), Nathan Fowler, who also placed sixth in the 50-yard butterfly (32.60) and eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:42.97), and Jeffrey Fraser, who took sixth in the 50-yard breaststroke (38.77) and 11th in the 200-yard freestyle (2:27.21). Theodore McGarry delivered three finishes in the top 11 in the boys' 8-and-under division and ended up with 39 points. He took ninth in the 25-yard butterfly (23.38) and 50-yard freestyle (44.96) and 11th in the 25-yard freestyle (18.76). Zachary Harnois also had a big meet for the Whalers by producing 34 points with three finishes in the top 13 of his events in the boys' 15-and-over division. His best finishes were an 8th place in the 50-yard freestyle (25.52) and an 11th in the 100-yard backstroke (1:09.77). Sophia Marchand also scored 27 points for the Whalers by placing sev- enth in the girls' 8-and-under 25-yard butterfly (21.70) and 11th in the 25-yard breaststroke (25.08). Catherine Shen added 25 points by placing ninth in the girls' 11-12 200-yard freestyle (2:26.44) and 11th in the 50-yard freestyle (30.56), and Caysea Anderson had 24 with her 10th place in the girls' 15-and- over 100-yard breaststroke (1:17.21) and 11th in the 200-yard IM (2:42.67). Karim Sorour also placed in the top 16 in three events in the boys' 13-14 division, as did Matthew McGarry in the boys' 11-12 division. Three Whalers came away with three personal-best times in the meet.
