By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Westport Sand Lake resident Jenny Stevens enjoys photographing local wildlife but it's the bears of British Columbia which have put her images on the pages of Canadian Geographic. This month one of her photos is in Canadian Geographic Best Wildlife Photography 2016, one of more than a dozen images in print publications and more online. Stevens has had a cam- era all her life but a trip with her mother through the Northwest Passage in 2009 caught her imagina- tion on the pleasures of nature and wildlife pho- tography. After the ship's photog- rapher, Mike Beedell, invited her to a photo workshop the next year she was hooked. That trip to British Columbia's Great Bear Rainforest in 2010 was the first of what has become an annual pilgrimage. Next month she'll be back for another six days on a guided expedition to see bears at the Khutzey- mateen Inlet West Conser- vancy with Ocean Light Adventures. The company is one of five which is allowed to operate tours within the inlet sanctuary which was established in 2008. The small group attends the sanctuary in a zodiac on tours which are regulat- ed somewhat by the tides which can take them inline or below the bears "These bears have no reason to fear man but I wouldn't go up and touch one," said Stevens who has witnessed the power of the bears first hand. A male bear, perhaps 20 years old appeared out of nowhere and had inten- tions of going after a cou- ple of cubs with the inten- tion of taking up with their mum. "Out comes this bear. He was after the cubs. The speed of this guy was unbelievable, the power and the speed," said Stevens. "No bear would ever come at you in attack mode. Our body language is slow. It's just mellow. It's an unbelievable feel- ing. They are humungous creatures," she said. While her trips to BC aren't long the pleasures of her trip go on in her photographs once she's home. "I spend weeks editing after I get back,' she said. The pleasure of seeing Stevens' photographs is just a click away. She has many uploads of her images on the Canadian National Geographic pho- tography club's pages at http://photoclub.canadian- geographic.ca/ The Review-Mirror April 7, 2016 – 20 A late-born four-month-old grizzly cub peers out from the safety of its mother at Khutzeymateen Inlet, B.C.
