Sincerely and gratefully yours in Christ, Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, S.T.L. Archbishop of Denver 20 16 ACA Commitment April 16-17, Archbishop's catholic appeal 20 15 A few years after our Lord's resurrection, Saint Stephen was dragged outside the city of Jerusalem and stoned to death for bearing witness to Christ. During the next three centuries, countless Christians offered their lives for the growth of the Church. In the twenty-first century, we are blessed to live in a nation that allows us to openly practice our religious beliefs. And yet, while today's Colorado Catholics are not called to shed blood for living their faith, we are called to imitate the courageous acts of Saints Peter and Andrew who left their nets behind and followed Jesus. (Mt.4:20) They abandoned the familiarities and security of their daily lives to accept the uncertainties and risks in becoming Christ's disciples. It is with this thought in mind that I've selected – Disciples take risks for the Kingdom – as the theme for the 2015 Archbishop's Catholic Appeal. But what risks are involved in following Christ and supporting the mission of the Church? When professing their beliefs – possibly through visible acts of charity to promote the Church's apostolates – some individuals may risk being alienated by others. For example, someone volunteering to defend life may risk derision from a neighbor who refuses to acknowledge the sanctity of life. Or someone unfamiliar with Christian stewardship may feel motivated to embrace the risks associated with a life of accountability and responsibility by sharing their gifts of time, talent, and treasure. What a tremendous exercise in discipleship! In reality, these are genuine risks that some may endure to form comfort in the remember our "Everyone who will acknowledge (Mt.10:32) It is precisely which has enabled the kingdom highlighted ask you to become a sacrificial please be as Lord acknowledge heavenly Father. Sincerely yours Disciples take risks for the Kingdom. As disciples of Christ, we are called to take risks to "Build up the Kingdom of God." The Catechism of the Catholic Church, (#942) states that lay people "are called…to be witnesses to Christ in all circumstances and at the very heart of the community of mankind." Your gift to the Appeal will empower our wider Church to be a living witness to Christ throughout twenty-five counties in northern Colorado. How much should I contribute? What is expected of me? One formula of tithing suggests giving 5% of our annual income to our parish, 3% to other charities, and 2% to the Archdiocesan Church through a gift to the Appeal. Please use the table below as a guide in deterimining your Appeal gift. May God bless you for your sacrifice.
