BASKETBALL RECRUITING BY CHRIS BALAS M ichigan head coach John Beilein and his staff have done a good job over the years of identifying tar‑ gets before they reach their recruiting peaks, giving them a head start over the competition. They seem to have done it again with a pair of prospects on the rise. Pontiac (Mich.) Cornerstone wing Jamal Cain (6‑7, Ri‑ vals.com's No. 70 junior nationally) earned MVP hon‑ ors at the Grand Rapids Storm Clas‑ sic the weekend of April 8. Now with The Family AAU p r o g r a m a f t e r spending the last few years with the Detroit Stars, Cain scored only four points in the championship game — a 56‑36 win over the Michigan Play‑ makers — but was the best player on the floor most of the weekend. Beilein has seen Cain a number of times in the past few months — the junior put up 40 points or more a few times against great competition this year — and was in his school early March 24 to see him work out. "He just works," The Family coach Mychal Covington said. "It's nothing out of the ordinary for him. It might be to some kids, but he actually likes to put in work on is game. "I told Coach Beilein it wasn't something I set up for him to see Jamal … He does this all the time." For 45 minutes to an hour each m o r n i n g , C a i n works out with Covington, trying to get his game to the next level. Cain is a relative newcomer to com‑ petitive basketball, having started on the AAU circuit be‑ tween eighth and ninth grade. Both he and his game have grown since. He's now 6‑7, up from 6‑3, and is rounding out his athletic game with a consistent jump shot. "He's absorbed so much and wants to get better," Covington said. "Now he's starting to reap the benefits. People are seeing his work ethic and picking up on it, and he's building more confidence from that. "His body is changing, his skill level is changing, and people have started noticing."   BASKETBALL RECRUITING Class Of 2017 Targets Are Blowing Up R i v a l s . c o m r a t e s Po n t i a c ( M i c h . ) Cornerstone 6‑7, 175‑pound wing Jamal Cain as a four‑star prospect and the No. 70 overall player in the class of 2017.
