C aris LeVert did everything he could to come back and play as a Michigan senior after a foot injury in the Big Ten opener. It wasn't meant to be, and on March 22 the scalpel got involved. LeVert underwent what U-M of- ficials are describing as a successful surgery on his left foot. Dr. Martin O'Malley performed the operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. "After the NCAA Tournament, my family and I had the opportu- nity to have a consultation with Dr. O'Malley in New York," LeVert said. "After a full evaluation, we dis- cussed the most appropriate options for helping me and my injury as I move forward with my basketball career. After much prayer and family conversations, we were confident it was the right time to have this proce- dure done to make sure I reduce the possibility of injuries in the future." Michigan head coach John Beilein concurred with the eventual decision for the procedure, although he noted Dr. O'Malley didn't overrule U-M's own doctors. "We were pleased Dr. O'Malley supported how our medical staff handled Caris' injury," Beilein said. "Even with that affirmation, he rec- ommended this additional surgery would be in the best interest for Ca- ris. "We all want him to have a healthy and successful playing career after college, and this procedure will only enhance that opportunity for him." The doctor gave assurances as well that Michigan's approach was what LeVert needed at the time.
