46 INDIE / ROCK www.guestlist.net FANS OF GUITAR MUSIC, REJOICE. NOYO MATHIS It's been quite the year for American three-piece Haim. Already featured as ones to watch in The Fly and even word- of-mouth fanzine Hairy Mouth, they are truly the band of the moment, and are looking to take over the indie world by the end of 2012. Formed of three sisters (and a dude on drums when performing live), their lush harmonies constitute their sun-drenched cantos; their wry union of folk and '80's pop (think Cyndi Lauper meets Patrick Wolf) is none more evident THREE GIRLS. A SINGULAR TALENT. HAIM Issue 39 / 2012 than on their flagship track 'Forever', which grooves along merrily in the wake of the 'cooler' indie guitar bands around. They made waves at this year's Great Es- cape festival in Brighton, serving to only peak the interest of music lovers around the UK. It's fortunate, then, that they have an EP out, also titled Forever, which is completely free to download from www. haimtheband.com. INDIE ARTIST OF THE MONTH JACK WHITE Straight from the coast of Portsmouth are the ex- citing up-and-coming, three-piece Noyo Mathis. Taking their cues from Brand New, Minus the Bear and Manchester Orchestra, their material - such as the anthemic 'Daughters' - is evidence of their well-developed song writing talents; at once mas- sive and intimate, their particular brand of low-fi indie rock is equal parts intricate and simple, se- rene and heavy, and bursting with ridiculously ad- dictive hooks, cathartic build-ups, and introspec- tive lyrics. The music waltzes around the edges of emo, shoegaze, and the more dance-oriented aspects of modern indie, all the while keeping the roar of their guitars at the forefront and focusing on making good songs, not mere genre fodder. Their EP Tethers is coming soon, and could be the start of something very exciting for fans of great guitar music. While The Stripes hadn't released a new song since 2007, hope remained for a return from the duo who found huge success with rock anthem 'Seven Nation Army' (you know the song). With little action from his other projects,The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, the output of the busiest man in music had appeared to slow down. However, Jack is well and truly back with the release of his debut solo album, Blunderbuss. Released to rave re- indie-garage-folk-punk- views, the album covers ground from riff-based distortion-soaked rockers like 'Sixteen Saltines', to the country charm of 'Hip (Epony- mous) Poor Boy', much of the al- bum is reminiscent of The White Stripes' best moments. White first found mainstream fame with their 2001 album 'White Blood Cells', ac- companied by the hit single 'Fell In Love With A Girl'. The Raconteurs had similar success with 2006 and 2008 singles 'Steady As She Goes' and 'Salute Your Solution'. With a well-received London show on the 23rd of April and two more coming up in June, White's spark still shines bright after the dissolution of the duo that made him.
