On Feb. 16, Milestone Equipment hosted
a potato seed cutting seminar at its shop
in Blackfoot, Idaho. Milestone is a major
supplier of seed cutters, and much of
the presentation—led by marketing
director Shane Mitchell and service
manager JB Hutson—focused on machine
maintenance and demonstrated the
significant difference that can be made by
making relatively small tweaks.
Potato Grower was there taking notes but,
alas, we only have so much space in which
to convey such valuable information. Learn

Cuttin' Up
Hutson demonstrates to growers how
to replace and adjust a cutter's sponge
drums—cylinders covered with foam and
a rubber skin that pull seed pieces through
the cutter blades. Drums should be
checked at the beginning of each season
to ensure they are in good condition;
rubber skins have a tendency to harden or
separate from the drums, resulting in less
control and size inconsistencies.
