Peay last year assumed the newly created position of chairman; previously he was the board's president. "I would say that since I took over the role as president, I worked toward making sure that the vision of the board was to provide programs that could give our dealer members a competi- tive advantage on the marketplace, giving them a lower price on a product or rebate, that would help their bottom line," he says. The board, he says, wanted to help its dealers get more customers. Rebound Results in Big Dealer Rebates Another success, he adds, was convincing vendors to provide accurate reporting of the business the dealers were doing with them so the board could rebate dividends back to the dealers at the end of the year from the co-op's excess funds. The co-op divvies up the remainder after bills are paid so it will not have to pay taxes. Dealers are paid based on the volume of their participation with vendors. The higher the volume, the larger the end-of-year rebate, Peay says. Because not all vendors were providing accurate numbers, pay- back at first could not be done based on volume. Instead, all dealers received the same share regardless of how much they participated. Now, "At the end of the year, when there is some profit left in the co-op, we find out how much came from this dealer and from that dealer and we rebate it back to the dealer. The higher the participation, the higher the rebate the dealer gets." Like just about everything else, the year-end rebates also have grown. The first year (six years ago), dealers got their membership dues back. (Annual dues are $2,500, with another $1,000 toward the annual conference.) The amount slowly rose as the organization grew. This year, dealers split a whopping $650,000.
