"A tuner usually involves a little more because, unlike a programmer, which changes the engine computer's operating instructions, a tuner intercepts signals and changes them," says Gale Banks Engineer- ing's Espino. "In order to do this, the tuner must read these signals, so along with the tuner is a plug-and-play wire harness that plugs directly into the factory harness." Many products in the segment are geared for DIY installation, allowing end users to reprogram their vehicles factory computer in their own driveway, says Dia- blosport's Litsch. "You'll often need access to a PC in order to update the tool or download updates specific to the vehicle, but the actual process on the device is designed for the end user to do it, making installations rather quick and simple," he says. "There is not much required beyond that as far as specific shop tools or training. "You should always make sure the vehicle has a solid voltage supply. If the battery is questionable, a trickle charger on a 2-amp setting is a good piece of insurance to avoid any voltage drop-related issues," he adds in caution. And, "dealers will want to keep a few models in stock (GM, Ford, DCX) to make sure you can accommodate any customer that comes in looking for a programmer." Programmers and tuners take up very little inventory room and the products are versatile enough that dealers can generally stock fewer items to service a wider variety of vehicles, according to John Espino of Gale Banks Engineering.
