Old Bones author Brian Lindsay will have to bide his time for the judges' decision until May 26 when the awards will be made at a gala in Toronto. Lindsay set his 'cozie' in Westport area where the protagonist is the owner and chief cook of an inn which is set on a fictional island on Upper Rideau Lake. "A lot of the local busi- nesses and scenery are included in the book. Any- one living in the area would recognize it," said Lindsay who has been a frequent visitor to the area by boat. It was a natural for Lindsay, a former personal chef, and a perennial fan of crime fiction to write his first novel as a cozie, a gentler subgenre of crime fiction in which sex and violence are downplayed or treated humorously, and the crime and detection take place in a small, socially intimate commu- nity. The story was 10 years in the writing which got a boost after Lindsay enrolled in a fiction course at Conestoga College. Old Bones is the first of a series of two books with the second coming out in June. "Hopefully there will be a third," said Lindsay who is self-publishing the work and learning lots of skills for the publishing world along the way. "The biggest surprise has been so many people seemed to like it. It's been very well received in Westport," said Lindsay. The book is for sale at Kudrinko's Country Gro- cer. Firefighters, police and Fire Marshall Office investigator were called to a home on Fortune Line Road last Tuesday after a death. Fire Chief Jay DeBernardi said police activated a fire call to determine that there was no fire or potential gas or other hazard to prevent police from safely entering buildings on the property. "There was an individ- ual who was deceased. Because it appeared to have involved a fire we had to activate the OFEM (Ontario Fire Marshall and Emergency Manage- ment)" said DeBernardi. The incident appeared to have involved a barbe- cue, said the chief. Firefighters from Elgin responded to the call with a pumper, tanker and res- cue. Leeds and the Thou- sand Islands also respond- ed but left the scene after it was determined the inci- dent was within Rideau Lakes jurisdiction. Police held the site until the OFEM investigator arrived. The scene was cleared around 10 p.m. Police investigating Fortune Line Rd. death
