MAY 2016 ■ 61 "Shane has always been a guy who could break out at any time for us," Avent said. "His time is coming, no doubt about that. He has such great understanding of the game, never fights the game. He can hit and hit for power. We know what kind of ability he has. We know he'll be ready to help us when the opportunity comes." While Chance continues to look for the next pitch to crush and Shane patiently awaits his turn, Steve Shepard has the hard- est job of all, watching from the sidelines. Ask any former player which is more dif- ficult, playing or watching your sons play, and the answer is always the same. "It's much harder watching," Steve said. "At least when I played I had some control over what happened on the field. Watch- ing from the stands or in front of the TV or computer at home, you're helpless. You want it so badly for them because you know how hard they've worked and how much it means to them. And there's nothing you can do about it. It's like torture." Torture or not, you can bet that Steve Shepard wouldn't have it any other way. His sons are playing Wolfpack baseball, and Wolfpack baseball is the Shepard fam- ily business. ■ Marsh & McLennan Agency is a proud supporter of NC State Athletics! GO PACK!
