easier course, but at a whole differ-
ent price point than Kampen. That
will change with newly structured
green fees. Tompkins is extreme-
ly sensitive to working to keep the
cost for the general public to play
the Purdue golf courses reason-
able.
"We know people in Tippecanoe
County and around Purdue are
price sensitive," Tompkins said.
"Our studies show that 90 percent
of our play will come from golfers
who are within a 30-minute drive.
It's not even whether the locals can
afford it or not. It's a mentality. We
(the general public) want bargains.
But we also recognize quality."
Several packages will be offered
that will keep green fees (with cart)
at the $50 level with discounts avail-
able for students and John Purdue
Club members for anyone purchasing
a $40 (for JPC members) annual Pur-
due Golf Card. The cost to play both
Kampen and Ackerman-Allen will
now be the same, which is a signif-
icant reduction in past rates for the
Kampen.
"We think we can offer a unique
experience for the golfer that wants
to play two very different but spectac-
ular golf courses," Tompkins said.
In the end, a quote by Dye on the
Ackerman-Allen website may sum
Purdue's aspirations best.
"As a person who calls Indiana
home, I am pleased to have had the
opportunity to build two of the finest
university golf courses in the country
at Purdue," Dye said.
