GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED OLUME 26, ISSUE 5 10 Boilermaker Super Bowl Moments 5 Alstott rumbles in: In Super Bowl XXXVII in 2002, Mike Alstott's touchdown marked a couple of firsts: The TD was the first title game score in Buccaneers' history and it was the first — and still only — rushing score by a Boilermaker. Alstott rushed for 15 yards and had 43 more yards on five receptions in the 48-21 victory over Oakland. 4 Four Patriots: For a few seasons in the mid-2000s, New England seemed to place a premium on gathering up former Boilermakers. And it worked out for all par- ties. In 2004 and 2005, four former Purdue players — Ros- evelt Colvin, Matt Light, Gene Mruczkowski and Brandon Gorin — won back-to-back Super Bowl rings. 3 Going undefeated: The more seasons that go by, the more impressive — and improbable — the 1972 Dolphins' perfor- mance becomes. Former Purdue signal-caller Bob Griese helped Miami to the only undefeated season in the Super Bowl Era. Griese spent part of the season injured, having broken his leg in Game 5, but returned to rally Miami in the AFC championship and then lead a win over Washington in Super Bowl VII. 2 Early MVP: Kansas City was the underdog all through the 1969 sea- son, in part because of an early-season knee injury to quarterback Len Dawson. But when Dawson returned, he rallied the Chiefs by winning playoff road games and then earned MVP in Super Bowl IV after an upset victory over heavily favored Minnesota. 1 Brees earns title, MVP: Drew Brees' raising of son Baylen after the Saints' Super Bowl XLIV win in 2010 is an iconic sports moment. Brees was excellent for New Orleans, galvanizing the city after it had been struck by Hurricane Katrina only three years earlier. Brees was named MVP in New Orleans' only title appearance. — Kyle Charters "Aug. 24 is my birthday, so I can't wait until this thing gets put together. The way they build things around here at Purdue, it's going to be open in August. Maybe July. But I just can't wait." Ja'Whaun Bentley on the projected completion date, in 2017, of the football performance complex "It takes a special person to be a Purdue athlete. I say that because I came to Purdue not because I wanted to be a great football player, but because it was a great opportunity for an education." Former Boilermaker Rosevelt Colvin at the groundbreaking ceremony April 15 "Do we potentially have a team that could be better? Yes, there's no doubt in my mind we could be better than this year. Without question, we can be a more skilled team, a better offensive team." Coach Matt Painter in mid-April T O P Boiler Index
