The Review-Mirror May 5, 2016 – 16 By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Many hands make light work for the Victoria's Quilts group in Portland which makes quilts to pro- vide to cancer patients who appreciate their warmth and the sentiment. The group, which start- ed in 2001, has grown through the years to now provide 55 or 60 quilts per year to local residents who have cancer. The group's quilts are distributed locally when someone contacts the chapter or through the national office in Ottawa which could ask for quilts. The group spends the first Monday of the month in Country Roads commu- nity rooms where through multiple quilts' production they piece, sew, iron, cut, pin and machine quilt the day away. While materials for the tops are largely donated the group needs to buy the cotton batting and the flan- nelette backing which are both part of the prescribed standards from Victoria's Quilts Canada. "People have been very generous to us," said Diane Haskins who was one of the original mem- bers of the group which has been meeting since 2001. The appreciative responses to the quilts they give keeps the group moti- vated about the value of what they are doing. "We've received plea- sure in the giving and in the making," she said. Sandy Massé joined the group three years ago. She had breast cancer 14 years ago and always thought it was a group with which she'd like to be involved. "It's a great group, and very friendly. It's a nice feeling," she said. The group is always looking for new volunteers to join them in their work. Potential new members can contact Betty Wight at 272-3638 for more infor- mation. "Everyone's talents are so different and there is a place for everyone. We all come from such varied backgrounds," said Eileen Duschenes. More information about Victoria's Quilts is avail- able on their website at www.victoriasquiltscana- da.com where there is also information about chap- ters and requesting a quilt. When warm weather strikes hikers and walkers have a yen to visit Rideau Waterway's Land Trust (RWLT) Rock Dunder property but they will have to wait. The Morton property and the Sugarbush proper- ty on Davis Lock Road are not open to the public until next Sunday, May 15. The sites are closed to the pub- lic between November 15 and May 15 each year. The closure protects the trails and laneways in the spring season and during the winter protects visitors from venturing onto trails which can be hazardous. The two properties are privately owned by the land trust and are not pub- licly owned or funded. The trust relies on the gen- erosity of visitors, mem- bers and other supporters. "People have to realize Dunder is environmentally sensitive. We ask people to respect it. Our greatest concern is it being loved to death in the sense of it being so popular that the trails are damaged," said RWLT President Doug Lewis. Police have the authori- ty to charge visitors for trespassing. Every police call to the property is added to the police call volume for which the municipality is billed for annually. The RWLT owns more than two dozen properties along the Rideau Water- way. A full list of their properties is on their web- site is at www.rwlt.org including information on amenities at the two Rideau Lakes properties. The Victoria Quilter's Portland chapter makes more than 50 quilts a year and during their once a month work session usually can complete cutting and piecing one top. •Clean-ups •Interlocking Stone •Walkways/Retaining Walls •Finished Landscaping •Hedge & Tree Pruning/Planting •All Lawncare Needs Fully Insured Call Ron Mulville 613-273-3690 Ron Mulville's Turf & Till Portland quilters provide cancer patients comfort with cheerful quilts The Country Roads Community Health Centre is headquarters for the Portland Chap- ter of the Victoria Quilts, a non-profit group which distributes quilts to cancer patients who can find some warmth and kindness in a gift from strangers.
