6 EAST IDAHO OUTDOORS MAGAZINE  —  SPRING/SUMMER 2016 I'm a runner. Trail runner specifi cally. Ultra trail runner more specifi cally. With age, I added niches to my run routine and once I went over the hill, I just kept going. I don't run fast. I run far. The kind of far that's awkward to talk about among non-runners and marathoners alike. I'm running beyond Boston. I've never even ran an offi cial marathon. I run farther. I ran my fi rst 50k (32 miles) last summer. So did 57-year-old Don Carey who is laughing with me in the photo below. I have my body and brain in prep mode for River of No Return 108k (67 miles) this summer. Why? It's simple. Because I can. People often ask me what I'm running from, but it's more like what I'm running to. I like to be in the woods. It's where I feel most comfortable when I'm working and when I'm play- ing. Running trails are just quick-paced hikes and hiking trail without a camera pack on my back is a real treat. Sure it's grueling, but challenge intrigues me. And frankly, I'm pretty high strung. It takes a few dozens miles to shut me up and calm me down. Running wilder- ness trails offers me those few dozen miles and then some. What does the wild offer you? Let's fi nd out this summer. I want you to do something new outside just because you can. Check out Raft, Ride, Run in this issue of East Idaho Outdoors. Raft, Ride, Run provides how-to insight from athletes who have get-up-and-go for rafting, riding and running. Maybe one of those will suit your fancy. Also read about camping in a covered wagon, shooting wildlife photos and off-road rid- ing. Those count as something to do outside just because you can too. Idaho is not rich in fi nances, but the wealth of natural resources we have here makes up for our skinny wallets. Enjoy our outdoor wealth this summer just because you can. As for running 67 wilderness miles in June? I'll be there. With bacon, bagels, craisins and candy in my run pack. I'm stingy with my rationed supplies so I don't share snacks, but I will share my race results with you in the fall issue. If you want results sooner, volunteer to pace me through the dark hours. That ought to be entertaining. See you on the trail.
