FOOTBALL RECRUITING class on National Signing Day. Only four players from within the state held U-M offers and were still on the market. Waterford Mott wide receiver Desmond Fitzpatrick had long shied away from Michigan (and the Wolver- ines weren't in position to add him by the time he committed to Louisville), but Detroit Renaissance offensive line- man Alaric Jackson, who committed to Iowa, had just picked up a U-M offer days before. The two big fish, though, ended up in Maize and Blue. Detroit King cornerback Lavert Hill got Michigan's day off to a good start at the Detroit Public School League's National Signing Day event. The 5-11, 173-pounder had previously been com- mitted to Penn State, but narrowed his realistic choices to Michigan and Mich- igan State by the time the date had arrived. The younger brother of U-M senior safety Delano Hill was the No. 5 player in the state, and the No. 14 cor- nerback and No. 176 overall prospect nationally. When he donned a Maize and Blue cap, U-M started rolling. Across the state, Rockford kicker Quinn Nordin — the nation's top spe- cialist and the state's No. 22 overall prospect — waited until the afternoon to make his commitment to Michigan public.
