The Review-Mirror May 12, 2016 – 16 Leeds County OPP and Brockville General Hospital Mental Health Crisis Team have joined forces again this year to help members in the community with mental illness. The OPP and Mental Health Crisis Team joint effort has been running in Leeds County since May of 2014. The program is run as a Ride Along with an officer and a designat- ed crisis staffer from the Brockville General Hos- pital Mental Health team. They conduct the ride along in an unmarked police cruiser seeing per- sons in the community with mental illness. The focus of the program is to ensure people that are seen by the team are con- nected with proper ser- vices in their community to assist them and reduce their contact with police. The program began as a way to better serve per- sons in Leeds County suffering with mental health issues. Leeds County OPP identified numerous persons who were repeatedly involved with police. OPP met with members of Brockville General Hos- pital Mental Health Cri- sis Team to develop a plan to better assist per- sons in the community with mental health issues. The program has proven to be quite suc- cessful, reducing police calls for service with per- sons suffering with men- tal illness, by 39 per cent in its first year. If you or anyone you know has a mental health issue or would like to know more about the program contact Provin- cial Constable Judy King, at 613-659-5200 or the Mental Health Crisis Team at 613-345-4600 or 1-866 281-2911.
