To learn more about the LEDES Oversight Committee, go to http://www.ledes.org. the service provider was at the time of billing, and what tasks had been performed. We benefit from this type of coding system by gaining greater visibility into and control over processes being performed and the costs for services rendered. Through standardization of these codes we gain transparency. Process Transparency: The Next UTBMS Frontier Although UTBMS codes are most commonly used in conjunction with legal services billing and therefore associated with cost-savings metrics, as an industry I think we are ready to move beyond that level of metric and begin to embrace UTBMS codes for process analysis and efficiencies. Today we see this in the realm of e-discovery. The courts are trying to standardize the processes in a bid for transparency, and the Electronic Discovery Reference Model (EDRM) is working diligently to help facilitate this process by establishing guidelines and creating e-discovery standards. One such tool, the EDRM Metrics Cube, incorporates UTBMS e-discovery billing codes and introduces a higher level of transparency into e-discovery processes. The UTBMS e-discovery codes were ratified by LEDES in 2011 and there is currently a subcommittee working to update both the UTBMS activity and expense codes to further facilitate transparency and the EDRM Metrics Cube. With higher levels of transparency, we achieve the potential for a higher level of satisfaction and trust surrounding the legal (credence) services performed. Comparing apples-to-apples ultimately puts you in a much better position to evaluate services beyond simply cost and supplies the transparency needed to reach a high satisfaction level with credence services.
