On Tuesday the Delta Mill Society welcomed some 21st century 'set- tlers' tracing the route of the military families which settled in the Perth area 200 years ago. The group is walking a route roughly tracing the route settlers took 200 years ago in the spring of 1816 to Portland where they travelled by barge to Rideau Ferry and up the Tay River to Perth. Perth residents Clark and Liz Theobold have spearheaded the event which has gotten the sup- port from community groups along the route which have been hosting events for the public and the participants. Good organization has- n't brought too many sur- prises except for the speed of the settlers in their walk which began on Sunday in Brockville with stops in Lynn and Athens on Sun- day and Monday nights. "It's shorter timing. We had a schedule to make sure we didn't push too hard. Five kilometers an hour is their normal," said Theobold who noted Delta was the half-way point. Brothers Andrew and Jonathan Slade are two trekkers who, battling health issues anticipated the walk would be chal- lenging. The two came from England to Canada last weekend, a trip they've Mirror The Review Thursday, May 19, 2016 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 125, No. 20 $1 incl. tax Roadside spray program not without controversy Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Creative Gardens Landscape Supply & Garden Centre •Landscape Supply Depot •Creative Floral Designs •Seasonal Gift Ware •Landscape Design & Construction •Seasonal Garden Maintenance 82 Concession St., Westport 613 273 8437 creativegardenslandscaping@yahoo.ca Mykaela Mallette fends off a South Grenville player during Rideau District High School's 2-1 semi-final win in Elgin Tuesday. This year's program, which was approved at a meeting on March 25, fol- lows an 80 km lane pilot project last spring. Roads which will be sprayed include county roads and some township roads in Drummond/North Elmsley, Beckwith and Lanark Highlands. In Leeds Grenville county roads will be sprayed as well as some township roads which have had infestations. No maintained road allowances will be sprayed and spraying will not be conducted within 10 meters of freshwater habi- tat. Contact with wild parsnip plant and then exposure to sun when its compounds are on your skin can result in painful burns. Ridding roadsides of the plant protects out- side workers and pedestri- ans. Property owners can opt out of having their proper- ties sprayed by posting their property with county supplied signs or home- made signs made to the county's specifications. Signs can be obtained from the counties' offices. The new practice is not without detractors who are concerned about the potential dangers of spray- ing ClearView, a selective broadleaf herbicide. "I think there needs to be a best management practices plan implement- ed where we look at where the wild parsnip is and we call the weed inspector," said Sonia Cirka, a proper- ty owner in Lanark and Leeds Grenville who is voicing her opposition to the new practice. Cirka thinks more notice needs to be given to property owners to warn them that the spraying will be taking place and prop- erty can be posted for no- spraying.
