Rideau Lakes Town Crier David Boyd will be among his peers this Sat- urday and Sunday in Perth at the Ontario Provincial Town Crier Champi- onships. Boyd will be one of 18 Town Criers from across Ontario in the competition which is a signature event of the town's 200th anniversary of the Perth Military Settlement. The event includes competitions of three cries over Saturday and Sunday and the declaration of the winner Sunday afternoon. A range of community members from the Perth area will be a new set of judges for each cry and will give a fresh perspec- tive to each round. "We really wanted to see local flavour integrat- ed into the championship while also gives criers the opportunity to impress a range of judges. As always, the people of Perth responded with enthusiasm to take part," said Perth's Town Crier Brent McLaren who is hosting the event. For the first cry on Sat- urday at 10:30 at the Crys- tal Palace the Town Criers' task will be to bring greet- ings from their home town or organization to the "The Military Settlement at Perth". The Town Criers have been challenged to include our area's interest- ing elements in their cry, including agriculture, the Rideau Canal and historic components. The second cry takes place Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Stewart Park behind Town Hall. The Criers have been teamed up with a local business, and the Criers' task is to promote said business in their cry. The third and final cry will take place Sunday afternoon at Crystal Palace at 1:30 p.m. Their task will be to bring some element of the local past to light. It could be an event, tell a story or re-enact as if they were at an event that occurred over these past 200 years. Criers are also compet- ing for special "People's Choice" recognitions for major sponsors as well as special awards in each round such as "Best Escort", "Most Humorous Cry" and the "Loudest Crier." Following the third and final cry, the scoring will be added up to determine the winners from the weekend. The Lyndhurst Rejuve- nation Committee (LRC) is organizing its annual village wide sidewalk, plant and yard sale this Saturday, May 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event includes a plant sale by the rejuvena- tion committee, which is looking for donations for fundraising efforts for its projects. The LRC volunteers have been making progress on a long-term plan of improvements for the village which among other projects have includ- ed street furniture, planters, barn quilts, wayfinding signs, park improvements and a pro- ject to connect the vil- lage's main street with the waterfront. The village is located on a well loved and ancient paddle route which crosses between the Rideau waterway at Mor- ton through to the St. Lawrence at Gananoque through a series of inland lakes which are part of the Gananoque River water- way. "We want it to be great for everyone who lives there but we want it to be inviting for tourists. We'd like to see the whole area become a destination for paddling tourists," said Terri Dawson. For more information about the day contact Terri Dawson at the Green Gecko at (613) 928-1196.
