rv-pro.com JUNE 2016 • RV PRO • 15 as RVIA holds to its construction standards. But he senses a desire for change is in the air. He predicts that toy hauler OEMs will begin to exert pressure on RVIA as early as the July meeting to up the design limits. "There was a time when every fifth wheel was 96 inches wide. Then the max- imum width was changed to 102 inches. It doesn't sound like much, but it changed how we build them," he notes. Likewise, the industry maximum for slide-outs used to be three. "Now, the average is five slides," McMahon says, adding, "I haven't seen any six slides … yet." Momentum Propels Grand Design The near overnight success of Grand Design RV has propelled it into the No. 4 spot in overall towable sales and neces- sitated the need for this year's multi-mil- lion dollar expansion at the company's burgeoning campus in Middlebury, Ind. Retail sales climbed 67 percent in 2015 from the previous year, according to Sta- tistical Surveys. "After three years, we are sitting where we projected we would be after six," says company co-owner, CEO and President Don Clark. A big part of the RV maker's success has been Momentum – the luxury fifth wheel toy hauler that has taken the nation by storm since its introduction just two years ago. The Momentum, available in four floorplans, is now ranked in the Top 5 of all toy hauler fifth wheel brands, according to Stat Surveys. MSRPs for the Momentum start around $69,000 with another $21,000 of options, putting it precisely where Clark and co- founders Ron and Bill Fenech saw the market heading when they launched. In other words, they accurately anticipated the market and came out with the precise RV consumers wanted at the exact time they wanted it. The secret to the concept of the toy hauler, Clark says, is its versatility of space. "Many owners of Momentum are reg- ular campers," he says. "They just need the versatility of space. And why not? A coach that is this luxurious and well-equipped, you're not losing anything by having a toy hauler." The Momentum features 11- to 18-foot garages, a wide-body design, a heavy-duty "drop-frame" chassis, oversized 8,000- pound axles and "H"-rated 16-ply tires with 17.5-inch aluminum wheels. The inside of the coach features a walk-in front Figure 2A Leading Luxury Fiver Toy Hauler Manufacturers: 2015* ❶ Keystone ❷ Heartland ❸ Dutchmen ❹ Grand Design ❺ Forest River ❻ Jayco ❼ Prime Time ❽ Lifestyle Luxury RV ❾ CrossRoads ❿ Eclipse * These are the Top 10 selling fifth wheel toy haulers that retailed in North America for $70,000 or more.
