Grand Design also offers the M-Class Momentum, a slightly shorter unit but still fully equipped, starting at about $20,000 less. "This opened up more buyers who don't want to or can't spend the money a regular Momentum costs," Clark explains. "We always thought the M-Class would address a much bigger market and would get bigger play. What surprised us is the number of people who step up to the full- size Momentum. Clark declined to identify which Momentum floorplan is most popular. "It's scattered all through the brand," he says. "The size of the garage is going to dic- tate what they buy. If they need an 18-foot garage, we have a floorplan that offers an 18-foot garage. Why a customer picks a specific unit is floorplan, eye appeal and price. This holds true for any RV, including a toy hauler. If the floorplan doesn't fit, they won't buy it." The demographic for the Momentum "is probably more diverse than we have for any brand," Clark says. "I see younger people who have money, are affluent and not shy about spending it. Most have toys and enjoy life. "Then I see older couples that might have a golf cart or a Harley or a Goldwing and want to take their bikes with them. … Some of these people have put $30,000 or more into their bike, so they're not going to scrimp on what they put their bike in. The bulk of the buyers are over 40, but we still have younger buyers as well." Clark adds, "The toy hauler market is crowded. The exciting thing is competition pushes all manufacturers to be creative. … Competition is good and forces us to be different – to pave our own road and go our own way instead of being one of the many out there." Grand Design's Momentum toy hauler is ranked by Stat Surveys as being in the Top 5 for all toy hauler fifth wheel brands – a notable achievement just two years after its launch. The well-equipped Momentum, featuring 11- to 18-foot garages, a wide-body design, and a heavy-duty "drop-frame" chassis, is available in four floorplans, not including its value-priced M-Class Momentum model.
