A FERTILIZER THAT CHECKS ALL THE BOXES
Anuvia's new GreenTRX product delivers
When it comes to fertilizer for his
greens, Superintendent Grant
Backus of Dolphin Head Golf Club
in Hilton Head, S.C., has a list of
what he wants.
That includes reduced volatilization
and leaching, slow release,
uniformity and, if possible,
sustainability too. If it is carbon
based to feed microbial activity,
then that checks another box off
his list.
"You don't get leaching with an
organic-material-based fertilizer
like you do with conventional
nitrogen sources, and the carbon
feeds beneficial microbes that help
fight disease and nematodes,"
Backus said. "You also get slow
release over time, and the carbon
helps increase the cation exchange
capacity. That helps the soil
hold onto nutrients and buffers it
against acidification."
Backus avoids conventional
fertilizers when he can, knowing
they provide a quick release, do
nothing to build the soil and are
subject to rapid leaching and
volatilization. He has found some
success with an 8-3-0 biosolid-
based fertilizer; however, it's far
from ideal.
"Members complain about the
odors, which can linger from one to
two weeks depending on weather
conditions," he said. "Getting my
