By Howie Crichton The Review-Mirror A discussion last month on potential borrowing costs for the Village of Westport's pending sewage treatment upgrade and their impact on prop- erty taxes upset several residents who aren't con- nected to the system. With three potential grant programs in the works, staff laid out the cost of borrowing $200,000 to as much as $2 million, depending on which, if any, of their grant applications turned out to be successful. Mayor Robin Jones felt the coverage of the meet- ing made it sound like a final decision was made on who was going to pay. "I want to assure people no decision was made," said Jones, who has received calls from some residents not tied to the system. About 30 properties in the village have their own well and septic. Some are only connected to water and not sewer. Most weren't built until after the 1970s when the system was installed and are in and around Cty. Rd. 36 and Main Street toward the base of the mountain. Some upset residents contacted The Review- Mirror as well. In hindsight, it would have been better if the potential impact on water and sewer rates was looked at as well, but the discussion was focussed on grant application options, not who was going to pay, Jones said. Water and sewer bills, which are currently being reviewed by a consultant to determine where they might end up, are current- ly at $140 per month. This weekend antique dealers from Quebec and across Ontario will be rolling into Westport to participate in the 23rd annual Westport Antique Show. On Saturday and Sun- day more than 30 antique and collectible dealers will be displaying their wares at the Westport Communi- ty Centre. Collectors of antiques and collectibles attending the event are sure to dis- cover something 'new' with the selection of deal- ers who will be attending the show. The dealers will be bringing a fresh inventory including the finest antiques in glass, tools, china, pine furniture, pot- tery, crystal, silver, folk art, formal furniture, col- lectibles, nostalgia and much more. The event is also an opportunity for antique owners to be able to get an appraisal of a family trea- sure by one of the dealers. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is an admission charge. Seeley's Bay Red Canoefest returns this Sat- urday June 4 with activi- ties on and off the water at Centennial Park and the public dock beginning at 2 p.m. Paddlers can join in a game of chance on the beautiful Rideau water- way around Seeley's Bay with a Silent Poker Run. Whether you paddle fast or slow, you have the same chance of winning a prize in this off-beat poker run which begins at 2:30 pm. The event leaves from the paddling station at Centennial Park. The Kids 'n Cops event is a great way for kids 4- 14 to learn about fishing, with help from local police services. There are prizes galore and equip- ment for young people who would like to learn. By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Anyone with an inter- est in Westport history will be sure to find plea- sure in a new volume of facts, anecdotes and pho- tos gleaned from the vil- lage's past. Rideau District Muse- um curator Christine Janeway compiled the vol- ume which includes early business directories, a street-by-street guide to who lived where during incorporation and early news articles. The book covers the early history of Westport from its first survey to five years after its incorpora- tion as a village in 1904. Janeway got inspiration for the compilation of the material from books about other communities. "I tried to do a little bit of the best of all of them. If it had been a bigger community it would have been harder," she said.
