56 • A&E MID-JUNE 2016 D id you know that instead of spending time measuring your blank sublimatable products, many distributors (and even manufacturers) offer shaped templates to help you get printing and pressing quickly? For instance, for rigid, flat dye-sublimatable products from Unisub and ChromaLuxe, you can find templates at Fol- lowing, I'll show you how to create great gifts for your customers without spending a lot of time using these templates. Note: For the purposes of this article, we'll use graphics and templates down- loaded from You can also contact your distributor for information as to whether they have templates available. BEFORE WE BEGIN: HOW TO DOWNLOAD Templates can be found linked within the individual product information on The templates and artwork can both be found under the Support link on the website, then visit the Asset Library. On the left side within the library, you'll see numerous purple bars noting the brand names as well as "Markets" and "Graphics". Under Markets, you'll find information including artwork for marketing towards specific groups or target markets from holi- days to basketball. Under Graphics, there are artwork files organized by categories including Baby Girl in addition to Badges, which are like small accents or banners that you can add to a design. Templates are grouped by alphabeti- cal product categories such as bag tags, keychains and Creative Border metal prints. Click on the category then the prod- uct name and number on the left to access the template (along with product shots). Once you've found the product you need, download the template by clicking on the icon on the far right. The zipped folder will contain two file formats, an EPS and a JPG file. EPS files can be used in CorelDraw and Adobe Photoshop while the JPG can be used in Photoshop Elements and (the full version of) Photoshop. We'll do a quick run through of opening EPS templates in Photoshop then show you how to use graphics with a template to create original designs for your customers. Note: The process for downloading templates and graphics from other distributors differs. STEP-BY-STEP STEP ONE: Open the EPS file in Photoshop. Be sure not to adjust the product dimensions in the pop-up box while you check to make sure the resolution is set to 300 dpi. Once the file is open, use the Crop tool from the main left side tool bar and draw a box around the product shape draw- ing only. We want to remove every- thing but the shape.
