article title The KM Organization A number of areas seem to reflect the growing maturity of KM in legal and its importance to the business. There is a slow but steady increase in the percentage of organizations in which KM is a separate department — 40% in 2008, 46% in 2010 and 48% this year. There has also been a small increase in the percentage of KM groups that report to the most senior person on the legal side (e.g., the managing partner) versus the senior administrator or IT. As KM matures and becomes more ingrained in the organization, we are seeing it expand and become integrated with many other areas in the organization. In the question regarding which departments or functions are integrated with KM, there has been an increase in almost all areas this year, with the largest being IT, library and litigation support. We included a new question this year about how KM is spread across the organization and 75% of respondents indicated that KM is largely centralized in one office but supporting all locations. This likely reflects the still relatively small size of most KM teams. Results also show a slightly higher percentage of organizations that have a strategic KM plan. It looks like organizations that indicated they were working on a plan in the survey two years ago got it done and are now on implementation. We asked respondents to share their KM mission or vision with us, and the essence of some of the responses are summarized in the survey results. There was definitely a common theme related to supporting client service, lawyer efficiency and collaboration. ILTA White Paper 7
