A&E JULY 2016 • a-e-mag.com 25 Made-in-the-U.S. Marketing Tactics The Zeit Team How should awards retailers market their products as "Made in the USA"? ✪ Put a Made in America icon on most or all of the marketing materials you utilize as a company. This includes fliers, catalogs, websites, etc. ✪ Take the same symbol, make it into a sticker, and denote awards within your showroom that are made in America. them are after something unique from their other medals. "Since marathon run- ners are essentially collectors of unique medals, it is critical to have a differenti- ated design for every event," Chemel states. Of course, this goes beyond race events, but it is a strong example of where a retailer can benefit from offering custom American-made products. Plus, if there are problems with the order, the retailer has a better shot at instant communication with a USA-man- ufacturer according to the team at Zeit. "(For those who manufacture stateside), it is much easier to troubleshoot problems with orders and make things right when need be," the team points out. Chemel also notes that with products manufactured in America, retailers will see better turnaround times along with more choices. "Choice is important. (You) need to provide options. It's not a one-size-fits- all world," he believes. Zydonik is quick to elaborate on that point, noting that it isn't wise to offer strictly made-in-the-USA products. "Selling made-in-the-USA products exclu- sively is not always practical," he states. "Product selection, the cost of sourcing the products, the availability of prod- ucts, and the time to source the products all directly impact the products that an awards retailer can and should offer to the end-user." Overall, it comes down to what your customers want. "Educating your cus- tomers on the choices they have—and the benefits of each—will drive your business and help drive informed deci- sions," Chemel finishes. Allowing your customers the option to purchase made- in-the-USA carries major benefits to the awards retailer.
