By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror The Westport Parks and Recreation Committee has developed plans for Lock- wood Park with a vision to making it a centerpiece in the village. The plan includes a walkway around the ball field, a children's play area, adult exercise sta- tions, a stage, the reloca- tion of the cenotaph, a bas- ketball area, a splash pad, a fountain, and new plant- ings, benches and gardens. Input for the design ele- ments was sought from the public during the previous term of council. "Everyone realizes the park has been in disrepair and no one has done any- thing," said Councillor Frank Huth, chair of the Parks and Recreation Committee. Council hopes a portion of the project can be cov- ered by a Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Grant which could provide up to 50 per cent of the cost of relocating the existing cenotaph from beside the fire hall to beside the World War I memorial gates at the entrance to the park off of George Street. By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Bobolinks, Eastern Meadowlarks or archaeo- logical remnants from the past won't be holding up progress on the construc- tion of Westport's new Large Subsurface Sewage Disposal System (LSSDS). That was the good news to take away from a pro- ject update at Westport's Committee of the Whole meeting on Monday when project coordinator Carla Fernandes gave council a monthly update on AECOM's work on the Westport wastewater treat- ment plant improvement project. Recently completed fieldwork to identify endangered species did not observe any species at risk on the site. A Stage 2 Archaeological Assess- ment, which was recom- mended during last year's Environmental Assess- ment, didn't reveal cultur- ally significant artifacts, or features. After a first response from Rideau Lakes firefighters, South Frontenac began the long task of extinguishing the fire, which continued to burn on Tuesday, fuelled by hay from this year's and last year's crop. No animals were in the barn. Photo Jeff Gemmill
