Issue 40 / 2012 THE GUESTLIST NETWORK www.guestlist.net 7 7 They have recently been described as one of the biggest pop groups on earth, and are most famous for singles like 'Laura' and 'I Don't Feel Like Dancing'. One half of the group, Babydaddy, talks lesbians, Kylie and that amazing Glastonbury performance. SCISSOR SISTERS Holly Holly@guestlist.net So, firstly, where did the name Scissor Sisters come from? Scissor Sisters came from a friend that was talking about some of his friends back when Jake and I started making music, he was talking about lesbians and he described them as scissor sisters and we thought it was funny! We loved the name, so we stole it. Do you have any particular concepts behind your albums, or are they more to do with how you're feeling at the time? I think they are. always trying to make pop music but in terms of the mood of the entire thing it does have to do with what we're going through and what kind of things are inspiring us at any given time. I think we are What were your main inspirations working on your new album Magic Hour? I think this new album was about having a good time, not worrying too much about what the songs were, other than letting them be and letting the album just come out as it should. It was also about writing some great pop music, making a great pop album and also listening to great pop music, as we did it. How would you define all your band mates in one word? Mental. You describe Magic Hour as 'future pop', but collaborations with Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams seem a bit more trendy than futuristic, what makes collaborations with the likes of Pharrell Williams, John Legend, Azealia Banks and Calvin Harris. How is it working with other artists when you're already a band? Well, we've done it for most of our career. We love collaborating, we wrote one of our biggest songs with Elton John in 2005. We love getting new energy from new people, and working with people What kind of messages do you aim to broadcast through your music? We like to give out a message of honesty, being who you are and being proud of that. A message about it being ok to have a good time and, as Ana says, think and dance at the same time. Where does Babydaddy come from? your name mentioned on the new album and also being able to write with people who are so good at what they do, and people that we have respected and love is a really great thing. What can we expect from your upcoming tour? It's gonna be really fun. A lot more dancing, a lot more new songs, it's gonna be fabulous! We like to give out a message of honesty, being who you are and being proud of that. A message about it being ok to have a good time. Magic Hour fall into the bracket of 'future pop'? Well, we do feel that these people are creating what future music should sound like, and they weren't we worked with Alex Reid as well. If we literally wanted to make future pop then we would be making music out of sperm, but we actually think these people have the closest idea of where music should be, and we have a good idea of that as well. Magic Hour is so full of the only collaborators, like Azaleia and John Legend was really exciting. It was great because they bring a new energy to the room and the album. As you're in a band, is it difficult to find things that you can all get inspired by? as you may all have different ideas of what works well? We all have lots of different ideas, that's what makes things work. We fight and we all try to get our ideas forward and, in the end, something good comes out of it. It was a name I got when I was younger because I had a lot of older friends, but I looked a lot older than I was even though I was just a wee child. The band formed in 2001. What have been the Scissor Sisters highlights so far? There's been so many highlights! Playing Glastonbury getting to open for Duran Duran and Elton John. Getting to write with all the collaborators you and also You worked with Kylie Minogue on her track 'I Believe In You'. Which do you prefer, being behind the tracks or performing them on stage? Me personally? I like being behind them. I like being in the studio, I like creating new things. But this band wouldn't work unless there was a couple of spotlight whores, so Jake and Ana love performing and love being infront of a microphone. I loved being in the studio and working with Kylie on that track. That was another huge highlight in my career and such an honour to do. You've been quoted saying that the UK is your spiritual home. What do you think the reasons for your success are over here? I don't really know what the reason for success is over here. I think the Brits love eccentric music and love things that are different, they love to dance and love to sing-along to all different types of music. If it was possible to be reincarnated band or artist for a day what who it be? into any other I think it would be fun! You know, Jake and I would probably join Queens of the Stoneage. Do you have any regrets concerning achievement? your musical No, I'm really proud of what we've done. We've been honest to ourselves through the whole thing and had a really long and successful career. We're very lucky. For more information check www.scissorsisters.com
