But Knox's absence will mean more responsibility for Jones, not only in car- ries — he seems capable of that, pro- vided he stays healthy — but in some intangibles. Leadership being No. 1. Although Knox was only a year older, the junior frequently took charge of Pur- due's position group, with it being one of his natural personality traits. Knox was almost always the first in line for running back drills, a trend that might not have a ton of deep meaning, yet it is representative. Across the board, leaders step to the front. In lineback- er drills, it's Ja'Whaun Bentley. With the defensive line, it's Evan Panfil and Jake Replogle. Wide receiver? DeAngelo Yancey. They are tone setters, players willing to come to the forefront to show their teammates how it's done. Jones now should do the same, rather than deferring. "I feel as though he needs to take that extra step and start taking charge," Knox said. "He was a freshman last year, but now, sophomore season, he has all the hype now, it's time to put up or shut up. Now he has a lot to live up to and people expect for him to be that way all the time. It's time for him to put a little bit more on his shoulders for the team and being a leader, stepping up and saying things if you see a dude not doing something right. Because that's what all comes with it when you say it's your team." Purdue's pushing Jones to be that guy. It's put him on some promotional materials and picked him to model new uniforms, positioning him squarely in the spotlight.
