GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 26, ISSUE 6 19 Celebrates Student-Athletes Meet You At Arni's TM Kyle Wood Senior, Movement and Sports Science Wood, a recent Purdue graduate from Orland Park, Ill., was one of 87 Purdue student-athletes named to the Big Ten Conference 2016 Spring and At-Large All Academic teams. Wood was successful on the field as well, earning third-team All-Big Ten from his first base position. Combined with the 68 Boilermakers on the fall list and 57 on the winter list, Purdue boasted 212 Academic All-Big Ten picks on its 2015-16 rosters. Women's track and field led the Boilermakers' spring contingent with 23 names on the list, including NCAA qualifiers Symone Black, Savannah Carson, Jessica Harter, Micaela Hazlewood, Aarin Jones and Chelsie Meeks. Other athletic standouts were men's golf first-team All-Big Ten selection Austin Eoff, Men's Tennis NCAA Qualifier Gergely Madarasz, first-team All-Big Ten softball pitcher and 2016 Academic All-American Lilly Fecho and 2016 Big Ten women›s golf champion August Kim. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade- point average of 3.0 or higher. At the point where you are now, it's not a cliché to focus on every week because you really need to take care of business each week. So when you look at the schedule and how it shakes out, what are your feelings? Hazell: "I don't know if it's a secret to anybody that September is very im - portant for us — and being able to get off to a great start. This team, to me, is finally in a position — and I say this sincerely — that we have (enough), minus a few things, finding a corner, finding out who those backups are at defensive line, plugging in some line- men who can help us (on offense), finding six, seven, eight, finding a re- turner. It seems like it's a lot. It is, but it isn't. I think we have enough good football players in our locker room to be very successful. But we need to es- tablish some confidence for this foot- ball team. I think that might be the big- gest part of this season, just to find out that we can finish the game." Gold and Black: In speaking big- ger picture with some of the play- ers, a lot of them mentioned how frustrated and fed up they are with losing. How do you feel about it as a coach? Hazell: "I don't even see any of that. I really don't. If you don't tell me that, I don't even think that way. That's not the way my mind works. I don't think, 'OK, we just won two, we just won three.' My mind works as, 'This is a completely different deal. New situa - tion, new season.' All that stuff is new. However, some guys might feel like that. That's why you have to get rid of those feelings with confidence. I don't
