GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 26, ISSUE 6 6 Performance complex Boiler Index: Smoking Although the opening of Purdue's new football performance facility is still a year away, the footprint for the center, positioned between Mollenkopf and the outdoor practice fields, was starting to take shape as of late June. When completed, the facility will be a much- needed upgrade for the Boilermakers, providing a centralized hub, with a locker room, training room, nutrition, weight room and more, in one spot. Boudia and Johnson Boiler Index: Steaming For David Boudia, qualifying for the '16 Games in Rio might seem routine, as it's his third Olympics; not so for Steele Johnson, who is making his debut. The pair will compete in the 10-meter synchronized competition as well as individually in the 10-meter — where Boudia will try to repeat as gold medalist. Tim Lester Boiler Index: Smoldering Will Purdue's quarterback play be better this season? That's the hope. If there's a man to pin that hope on, it's new quarterbacks coach Tim Lester. The former Western Michigan QB has settled in nicely, helping young Boilermakers David Blough and Elijah Sindelar with the nuances of the position. Some of that mechanical work — plus a QB-friendly offense — helped the duo look more at ease in the spring. Boiler Index Remember When … Heading into the 1999 season, the enthusiasm for Purdue football was at a high point not seen in a couple of decades. Quarterback Drew Brees was coming off a record sophomore season and was just starting to get big- time national attention for third-year Coach Joe Tiller, especially after beating No. 4 Kansas State in the Alamo Bowl. But, let's face it, the best part of it for Gold and Black staffers was the opportunity to spend several hours with Brees on a road trip to Grissom Air Force Base for the photo shoot. You could easily tell that greatness off the field was going to be as much his story as on-field success.
