Volunteers have been busy putting the finishing touches on plans for this year's Elgin Days festivi- ties taking place this Fri- day, Saturday and Sunday July 8, 9, and 10. In keeping with tradi- tion the majority of activi- ties will be taking place on Saturday with events and activities from the Bethel Tabernacle Church at the corner of Hwy. 15 to the Elgin Lions Club Hall. The Bethel Tabernacle is busy all day with free activities and food for families, including a pan- cake breakfast, bouncy castle, face painting, pet- ting zoo, Thomas the Train table, hotdogs, freezies, and more. At the other end of town for the first time the Elgin Lions will be host- ing an outdoor beer tent, featuring live music by Rocku High & the North- ern Lights, as well as a car show and the Firefighters' Association chicken bar- becue. South Crosby Council- lor Claire Gunnewiek is excited about the coopera- tion organizers have had across the community since they began their planning in December "We just want it to be better than the year before," said Gunnewiek who has been part of the event's renaissance over the past few years. Friday, July 8 marks the beginning of the weekend with a coffee break at the Community Centre from 9:30-11:30 a.m., and 6- handed euchre in the same location at 7:30 p.m. The Elgin Lions host a spaghetti dinner and trivia night beginning at 6pm where the winning trivia team will go home with Westport's a popular stop for bikers but this Sat- urday and Sunday it is a destination when the Rideau Thunder Motorcy- cle Show comes to Con- cession Street and Lock- wood Park. Custom and vintage bikes, vendors, food, clothing, draws, acces- sories, swap meet, live entertainment, show and shine and more are fea- tured both days with activ- ities around the arena, Lockwood Field and onto the street. It runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is by donation. Concession Street will be closed to traffic between George and Spring Streets to accom- modate the visitors who are expected to come from across Eastern Ontario. Paul Herlehy has been heading up a team which has been working out the many details of gathering sponsors, finding vendors, arranging publicity and creating buzz on social media to organize an event which visitors will want to come back for a second day. Competitions of bikes will be held on both days with completely different categories to enjoy. Live entertainment on Saturday includes The Trevor Walsh Group and on Sunday it is Mojo Shooter. "There have been many people who were willing to help. The community support has been really good," said organizer Paul Herlehy. The event's profits, including donations from the door and sales of mer- chandise will be going to benefit Friends of the Arena. For more information about the event go to their website www.rideauthun- der.ca. A Rideau District High School (RDHS) student recently attended a presti- gious leadership confer- ence that he hopes will prepare him for a future in international business or law. Evan Walter of Elgin attended the Global Young Leaders Conference from June 13-22, in both Wash- ington, DC and New York City. The international youth leadership confer- ence allows participants to explore cultural differ- ences, gain first-hand exposure to the challenges of international diploma- cy, build confidence and enhance their decision- making abilities. As part of the conference, Walter toured historic sites and war memorials, participat- ed in simulations of Unit- ed Nations proceedings, learned about and debated current world issues and discovered the value of other cultures. Walter said the confer- ence exposed him to a wider cultural reality and helped him build confi- dence and develop leader- ship skills that will be invaluable to his future at university and beyond. "Coming from a small town in a country like Canada, it really impacted me in the sense I was able to see people from differ- ent places and gain a wider perspective and learn new things about people," he said. "I have also learned priceless and invaluable things about myself and what I'm capable of." Among the experiences the conference exposed Walter to included: Learning about leader- ship and diplomacy: Wal- ter attended a lecture by Angelica Silvero, a spokesman for the World Bank on the importance of the bank and the positive impact it has on the economies of Third World nations, such as relief offered to Haiti following the devastating earth- Mirror The Review Thursday, July 7, 2016 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 125, No. 27 $1 incl. tax •Continued on back page •Continued on page 3 Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Young leaders gathering gives RDHS student a new perspective Rideau Thunder Motorcycle Show this weekend Elgin Days festivities Friday through Sunday "In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
