STARRINKS.COM JULY.AUGUST.2016 / 47 • Replace the sand that was removed and saturate with a fine spray from the hose to compact it. • Remove net carefully. • Place covers on inserts. • Check inserts to be sure they did not move during the remaining part of install and sand saturation process. • Turn refrigeration on to the freeze floor. • Paint or replace object on insert cover to location after ice install. • Repeat on the other end of the rink. ICE IN • Locate the center of the goal line and inserts after completing measurements above. • Follow common guidelines from above. • Remove ice around measurements by carefully chipping away ice. o Suggested tools: hammer and chisel or hot water and Shop Vac. o Suggestion: Remove ice with hammer and chisel until you reach the sand, then use hot water and a Shop Vac to remove the frozen sand. This method will allow the operator to safely remove frozen sand around refrigeration pipes to locate the final location of the inserts. The location of the refrigeration pipes will determine the final location of the inserts due to the difficulty of moving refrigeration lines to one side or the other with the ice installed. • Place inserts utilizing marsh pegs and net to hold inserts in place. • Surround inserts with clean sand to top of insert and saturate with water and freeze (Note: The top of the insert should be level with the top of the sand). • Mix white paint and dab with paint brush to repaint the ice white. • Pack slush around the marsh peg, small amounts at a time, allowing to freeze. • Once slush is roughly at the same height as the ice sheet, finish with fine mists of water to achieve the finished projects.
