OFFICIAL APPOINTMENTS Deacon Ruben Estrada, relieved of duties at Holy Cross Parish in Thornton and appointed deacon at Ascension Parish in Denver, e¦ ective August 1, 2016 Deacon William Hastings, relieved of Sabbatical status and appointed deacon at St. Peter Parish in Greeley, e¦ ective July 1, 2016 F ather Steven Voss, pastor of St. Joseph parish in Fort Col- lins, discovered several weeks ago that a tumor he's been living with has increased in size, and is asking for prayers from the community. On June 27, Father Voss was hospi- talized with an acute case of pancre- atitis, he wrote in a letter to his parish. During his fi ve-day hospitalization, he learned that a tumor in his torso has grown, which was the cause of his sudden illness. He explained that two months ago, on the advice of his oncology team, he elected to switch to a diŠ erent drug that had the potential to aggressively decrease the size of the tumor; however, the mass grew while he was on the drug. Now, Father Voss has been advised to consider immune therapy in an attempt to enhance his body's immune system to fi ght the cancer. However, this is not an easy decision for him, as he is also a recipient of a kidney transplant and takes anti-rejection drugs that suppress his immune system in order to keep his kidney healthy, he wrote. "Stopping the drugs would allow my immune system to come back online, but would surely cause my body to reject my kidney," Father Voss wrote. "I'm sure you can understand how diŸ cult this decision would be." In spite of his diag- nosis, Father Voss is staying positive and is "confi dent that your prayers and support [will] keep me feel- ing far better than is humanly possible," he wrote. "It's certainly not the news we have hoped for; how- ever, it does ser ve as a reminder to give thanks for each and every day that God blesses us with good health and vitality," he wrote. "… I see this only as another part of the journey, a jour- ney I have undertaken hand-in-hand with Jesus Christ. This brings me peace." Please keep Father Voss and St. Joseph's parish community in your prayers. FATHER STEVEN VOSS " BY AARON LAMBERT aaron.lambert@archden.org @AaronLmbrt BY MELISSA KEATING P ope Francis urged pilgrims to remember to listen during the Angelus address July 17. "A guest doesn't need to be merely served, fed, and cared for in every way. Above all it is necessary that he is lis- tened to — recall well this word — to listen," Pope Francis said. He used the story of Mary and Martha as an example of busyness vs. listening. "In busying herself and doing things, Martha runs the risk of forgetting — and this is the problem — the presence of her guest, which in this case is Jesus," he said. Pope Francis went on to explain that Jesus didn't need many things to feel welcome. He simply needed to be heard. "To welcome him, many things aren't necessary; rather, just one thing is necessary: to listen to him, the word, to listen to him, show him a fraternal attitude, such that he feels that he is among family, and not in some tempo- rary stopping-place," he said. He asked the pilgrims to practice the virtue of hospitality in their own homes. "I ask you to learn to listen and ded- icate more time to this. In the capacity to listen is the root of peace," he said. SOURCE: ZENIT. " In the capacity to listen is the root of peace"
