28 POTATO GROWER | AUGUST 2016 28 POTATO GROWER | AUGUST 2016 I usually don't start thinking about the Christmas holidays until December, but Christmas 2016 promises to be one of the most memorable for the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) as well as the entire state of Idaho. This year, Idaho is honored to provide the American people with the Capitol Christmas Tree. In November, a 60- to 85-foot conifer will be cut from the Payette National Forest in west-central Idaho and transported 2,800 miles to Washington, D.C., where it will grace the U.S. Capitol lawn. The Big Idaho Potato Truck has been asked to travel across the country with the Capitol Christmas Tree and transport more than 5,000 ornaments that Idaho schoolchildren will make for the tree. The ornaments will highlight different parts of Idaho that are near and dear to all of us Idahoans, including the syringa flower, Appaloosa horses, cutthroat trout, the Western white pine, star garnets and, of course, the Idaho potato. From the tree-cutting ceremony on Nov. 2 to the tree's arrival at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, the Big Idaho O CHRISTMAS TREE! Potato Truck will be a part of the all the festivities. The tree lighting event is expected to take place the first week of December; the U.S. Speaker of the House of Representatives will determine the date. Following the tree lighting ceremony, the IPC will host a baked Idaho potato dinner for hundreds of government officials. This is a historic affair, and we are honored that the Big Idaho Potato Truck has been invited to play an important role in one of America's oldest and most celebratory events.
