By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Westport wildlife pho- tographer Jenny Stevens' 2015 photograph of a sleeping Grizzly will be part of a 13 coin series by the Royal Canadian Mint. The coins will be part of the new Celebrating Canada's 150th coin series which was officially announced last month. Photos representing the ten provinces and three territories were chosen from the Canadian Geo- graphic's My Canada Photo Club gallery." 'Let Me Think About That' is an image from a June 2015 trip Stevens took to the Khutzeyma- teen Grizzly Bear Sanctu- ary in British Columbia. "The tide was going out and we were in a Zodiac that was approaching a sleeping grizzly on the side of the sedge grass bank. We were actually under him as the tide was so low. He woke up, looked at us...and went back to sleep. We were three meters from him," said Stevens. Stevens has had a num- ber of her bear pho- tographs published from her trips to British Colum- bia and the Arctic since The Lockwood Memor- ial Field and Park renewal has begun in Westport and it received a big boost last week from the Foundation that started it all 30 years ago. The Lockwood Foun- dation has pledged $100,000 to help with the revitalization plans over the next four years. They will donate $25,000 this year and up to $25,000 from 2017-19. In those three years, the grant will be matched to other fundraising. Over the next six weeks, the final steps in the demolition of the ten- nis courts and shuffle- board will be completed in Lockwood Memorial Field and Park. Last Thursday, the new owner of the shuffleboard fencing removed it and the tennis court fencing owner will do the same by Labour Day. The Village is tendering for removal of asphalt in the tennis and shuffleboard courts as well as for the construction of the walkway around the park. Plans are proceeding to move the cenotaph from its current location in front of the fire hall to be front and centre inside the Memorial Gates at the George Street entrance to Lockwood Memorial Field and Park. That project also got a big boost with a $10,000 donation from Gregory and Susan (Hamilton) Guichon, which covers half the cost of moving the cenotaph to its new loca- By Margaret Brand The Review-Mirror Rain might have been welcome at the Delta fair last weekend when the at times oppressive heat appeared to deter some people from spending some time at the fair. Crowds were thin on Friday but improved on Saturday, said fair secre- tary William Morris. "When you had the intense heat on Friday, if you had young children, you didn't want to bring them. In the rain you could at least walk around in an umbrella," he said. Watering stations with sprinklers were installed so that the kids could beat the heat of the day. While rain sometime during the weekend has traditionally served to keep the dust down this year water truck was doing the job. Dry conditions also helped to shorten the horse draw when the animals made fewer rounds of pulls with less weight before the animals could pull no more. "Friday wasn't a total write off. People were there for the grandstand shows. Saturday's atten- dance was up," said Mor- ris. An unaudited number of 7,000 for fair atten- dance has been estimated this year, down from last year's 9,000.
