"He's 23 years old, and that's a veteran for our team." Brogdon became the fourth Virginia player to be drafted in the last five years, joining Justin Anderson, Joe Harris and Mike Scott. Initially, Brogdon said he looks forward to making his professional mark on the de- fensive end. "Defense will keep you in games if your shot's not falling, and that's what I pride my- self on," he said. "I pride myself on being a good defender and being a smart player that's going to make the right plays and help the team win the game." Playing for the Bucks' summer league team in Las Vegas in July, Brogdon showed a little bit of everything. In five games, he averaged 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds, 5.0 assists and just 0.6 turnovers. Later in the month, Brogdon was set to train with the Olympic team (he was one of 25 players selected by USA Basketball). Suffice to say, Brogdon shouldn't have any rust when Bucks training camp opens in October. No doubt, he figures to get some workouts in at John Paul Jones Arena before then — something Anderson, Harris and Scott have done in past years. When Brogdon talked with media mem- bers from Milwaukee, he was effusive in his praise for what Virginia head coach Tony Bennett has meant to him. "He's had an enormous influence on me, starting when he recruited me in high school," Brogdon said. "From the instant we met, we connected on a faith basis — a deep faith and belief in God and that God will take care of you. "But it progressed into a similar kind of thinking about the game. He's taught me so much on and off the court." ◆ BEST OF THE REST Derek Bard, golf — The Golf Coaches As- sociation of America named the third-year a third-team All-American, while Golfweek an- nounced him as an honorable mention selec- tion. In addition to a strong college season, Bard earned invites to the Masters and U.S. Open after a runner-up finish at the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship. Matt Thaiss, baseball — The third-year catcher earned All-America honors for the sec- ond straight season, becoming just the fourth Virginia baseball player to receive multiple All- America honors, joining Sean Doolittle, Danny Hultzen and Mike Papi. Thaiss was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft by the Los Angeles Angels. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski, tennis — The fourth-year helped lead the Cavaliers to their second straight NCAA title and their third in the last four years. Kwiatkowski, who was a force in singles and doubles, was named Out- standing Player of the Tournament. Yannick Kaesar, swimming — The fourth- year was a four-time All-American and was selected to represent his native Switzerland at the Olympics in Rio. Kaesar, who competed in the 2012 games in London, is the third Cavalier swimmer to compete in multiple Olympics. Filip Mihaljevic, track and field — The third-year was named the 2016 ACC Outdoor Men's Field Performer of the Year after win- ning the shot put at the NCAA Outdoor Cham- pionships in June. Mihaljevic was selected to compete for his native Croatia at the Olympics. — Whitelaw Reid
