The Township of South Frontenac has joined the list of municipalities which have instituted burn bans. The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands instituted a total burn ban last month. Tay Valley and Drum- mond/North Elmsley have a burn ban with the excep- tion of small supervised campfires no larger than 3 ft. x 3 ft.. All other burn- ing is prohibited. The Township of Rideau Lakes has regula- tions between April 1 and November 1 which restrict all daytime burning to a 2 ft. x 2 ft. campfire. Permits are required for any burn- ing outside of the 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. restricted hours. The township has not added further restrictions yet. The Fire Condition Hotline is 613-928-2251, Ext. 600 or 1-800-928- 2250, Ext. 600, and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Last week the Cataraqui Region Conser- vation Authority upgraded conditions in the water- shed to moderate drought. After announcing the big names in music for this year's fall line-up, the Ontario Festival of Small Halls is now nearing com- pletion on confirming local opening talent. Community acts are set for almost all the shows, happening from Sept. 14 to Oct. 2, and include a range of musical stylings and performers. Local openers Nellie Holmes and Bob Webb will grace the stage at the Morton Community Hall; Miss Emily is opening for Darlingside in Seeley's Bay; Steve Curtis and Pat Johnson are performing before Hat Fitz and Cara at the Delta Old Town Hall; Alex and Sean Price are opening for Tomato Tomato at the Elgin Red Brick School; Rocky High & the Northern Lights are warming up the stage for Elliott Brood at the Joshua Bates Centre in Athens; String Tease will open for The Cataraqui Region Water Response Team is maintaining the Moderate Drought declaration across the Cataraqui Region Con- servation Authority (CRCA) jurisdiction, despite the rainfall early last week. While the Cataraqui region did get rain, it was a minimal amount, enough to green some grasses and vegetation, but not enough to raise stream flows or lake levels, or provide respite from the drought conditions of the past few months. The CRCA from Kingston and west has received minimal rainfall in July (only about 15 mm of the average 70 mm), though the eastern part of the CRCA, around Brockville, has received much closer to normal pre- cipitation for the month. Areas to the north, around Westport have received minimal rainfall. Most of the days of June and July have had no rain at all, so even with rainfall, things dry up again quite quickly. Stream flows have been well below normal sum- mer low flows for multiple months now, and continue to fall. Lake levels across the CRCA, and eastern Ontario, have been falling due to evaporation, and are lower than normal in most cases, potentially exposing hazards that are normally irrelevant. Recreational users should exercise cau- tion. The long term forecast appears to predict a con- tinuation of hot and dry conditions through the fall, which means current con- Mirror The Review Thursday, August 4, 2016 Serving North Leeds and area since 1893 Vol. 125, No. 31 $1 incl. tax •Continued on page 3 Canada Post Contract No. 40021501 Drought conditions persist Local opening acts confirmed for Festival of Small Halls "In the depths of winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer."
