OPERATIONS SECURITY: FAMILY GUIDANCE
WHAT IS OPERATIONS SECURITY?
Operations Security is the process used to identify what unclassified information needs to be protected, when and
how it needs to be protected and who it needs to be protected from. We call this information: Critical Information.
So why don't we just classify everything? Governments of Canada regulations require that we remain as
transparent as possible with the Canadian Public. As such, only information, that if released, could pose
immediate harm to personnel or the nation is classified. Family members may be targeted as a source of critical
information. The most important thing you can do is to be aware of and understand possible threats. Do not
communicate critical information over the phone, internet or in public places. An adversary may also use a variety
of approaches to befriend someone for the single purpose of gathering critical information. Please make
observations about suspicious behavior and report it to your family member's chain of command or Military Police.
It is okay to tell extended family, friends and neighbors that your family member belongs to the Canadian Armed
Forces and works at Garrison Petawawa.
REMEMBER TO PROTECT ESSENTIAL INFORMATION SUCH AS:
Address of unit members and their families
Specialty occupations, such as, Intelligence
Deployment dates and specific locations
Pre-deployment timings and activities
Vacation dates and locations
Names of injured members and their families
