4. MY CHILD RECEIVES HUGS AND SIGNS OF AFFECTIONS Physical closeness such as a gentle touch, a hug, or snuggling helps a child feel loved and precious. It is a good idea to send a child off to school with an affectionate goodbye. A welcoming hug on return reconnects a child to the home and family. HOW OFTEN DOES THIS STATEMENT OCCUR? WAYS TO REACH MORE CONSISTENCY 5. MY CHILD HAS A REGULAR BEDTIME ROUTINE WITH TIME TO BE QUIET AND CALM DOWN Routine is very important to a child. Children feel safe and comforted when they are familiar with a routine and can predict what happens next. Quiet activities such as reading a story before bed helps a child to calm down. Watching TV is not a restful activity before bed as if frequently overstimulates the child. HOW OFTEN DOES THIS STATEMENT OCCUR? WAYS TO REACH MORE CONSISTENCY 6. MY CHILD GETS ENOUGH SLEEP Children do not function well when they are tired. Without adequate sleep the body and mind become less efficient. Not having enough sleep contributes to feelings of stress or irritability and lack of energy or enthusiasm. Tolerance for small problems is lower, little things become bothersome and reactions are less appropriate.
