Media reports on various issues and the fears that it may bring about can be very real to your child. This is why it is important to identify with the way in which your child is feeling and reassure them that there are people around that are working very hard to make sure that their personal world remains as safe as possible. Explain to your child that you are there to protect them and also provide explanations of who else may be around to protect them. If a child is older they may be comforted by being given the knowledge that there are other members in their community that are also looking out for their safety and security. 6. SELECT KID-FRIENDLY NEWS SOURCES FOR YOUR CHILD As adults we are aware that all news is not created nor reported equally. Take the time to select a good news source for your child. In general, TV news especially the local stations tend to focus on issues of crime and violence that are occurring in your local are as well as global news. Newspapers are often seen as the more in- depth news coverage providing background coverage and context. Keep in mind that there are news sources that are created just for children. There are many websites and magazines that are dedicated towards reporting the news to children. Whatever the situation, and your child's age it is important to balance your child's exposure to the news and set clear limits and guidelines. Make it known to you children that you are there to explain what they have heard or seen as well as to answer any questions they may have. Experience the new with your child and be there to guide them. Source: Children Now & National Association of School of Psychology 2015
