An information session about noxious weeds, including Wild Parsnip, Poison Ivy and Dog Stran- gling Vine takes place this Saturday at 10 a.m. at Chaffey's Lock Communi- ty Hall. County Weed Inspector Larry Sudds has been invited by the Chaffey's & Area Lake Association (CALA) to talk about potential solutions for eradication and control. Wild Parsnip is distin- guished by a yellow umbrella, and can cause injury to animals and humans who contact its sap which can burn when exposed to sunlight. The United Counties sprayed county roadsides last year and half of the township's county roads this year as part of a two year cycle The township has also had spraying on some of its roads to the east of Cty. Rd. 42 as well as roads between the Narrows Lock Road and Hwy. 15. The weed has been migrating from roadsides onto the Cataraqui Trail between Chaffey's Lock and Smiths Falls. Volunteers taking care of the Cataraqui Trail think there needs to be more signage for the pub- lic to be made aware of the dangers of Wild Parsnip. Forfar resident Rod Croskery realized the lack of awareness one day last month when a mother and son were about to go into a solid bank of wild parsnip to avoid his mowing along the trail. "She had no idea that those tall plants with the yellow flowers are poiso- nous. She listened with increasing horror as she looked at the bare skin on her son and her own bare arms and legs. Away they went, firmly in the middle of the trail," reported Croskery. "People need to be aware of the consequences of the stuff," said Cataraqui Trail Manage- ment Board chair Doug Good who would like to see more signs in public places. "We unfortunately have so much of it. A lot of peo- ple don't recognize it at all. Although portions of the Cat Trail have been signed about Wild Parsnip there are other areas that have not. There is a huge concentration around the area of the old Forfar Sta- tion for example," report- ed Good. The information event is also an opportunity to become a member of CALA.
