at all; as long as the grower is willing to
supply them with unpriced potatoes, is it
logical for them to turn him away?
These consignment sales companies have
come under fire lately for intensifying
market competition for fresh potatoes.
But how else can they move excess
supply than by taking market share from
a competing sales organization? And
how do they take market share? They
do it with price, another process that
destroys grower returns. Why not? As
long as a grower is willing to go below
decks—in fact, fight for the privilege
of manacling himself to the ship and
rowing it for the captain's benefit and
not his own, nothing is going to change.
Perhaps it's time for the rowers to pause
a minute and talk with one another. It's
not impossible that they could negotiate
a deal wherein they actually get paid
for rowing the ship. But, as long as they
continue rowing, literally paying for the
privilege with their equity….
Test question: Can you name another
industry where the cost of goods is
consigned? If you can, let me know. I
want part of that deal!
