But after the first 19 practices, ending with the Aug. 20 jersey scrimmage, there's been very little separation between the trio. No one, unfortunately, emerged as the clear-cut frontrunner. But the Boilermakers are likely to go with Norwood, who has been at cornerback only after switching over from wide receiver a few games into last season. He's smart, Ross Els says, having a good understanding of the defensive concepts. And at least that's a start. Weakside Linebacker 1. Danny Ezechukwu 36 6-2, 251, Jr. 79 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack, 1 int., 2 PBU, 1 FR, 1 FF* 2. Markus Bailey 21 6-1, 230, R-Fr. Robert Gregory noticed Navon Mosley's approach in the summer, that the freshman safety kept his head in Purdue's playbook, asked a lot of questions and seemed determined to become a contributor. All that early work paid off once camp came around, when Mosley was with the second team. But by Aug. 13, a week-and-a-half in, Mosley was getting reps with the first team. And in so doing, he's taking snaps away from Gregory, the veteran. But in Els' system, it seems like there will be room for all three, perhaps in a rotation that takes advantage of their strengths. For Mosley, that's being a rangy safety with good instincts, uncommon for a rookie. End 1. Evan Panfil 95 6-5, 268, Sr. 30 tackles, 6.5 TFL, 4 sacks, 1 FF* 2. Shayne Henley 47 6-3, 250, Sr. Although he's listed as a backup, Gregory Phillips is likely to get starter-like snaps as part of an offensive system that will frequently feature four wide receivers. And that's a good thing. Phillips had one of the best training camps of any Boilermaker, catching nearly everything that was thrown his way with only a handful of drops. How many chances, though, will he get in the season? With three quality starters, plus a running back in need of carries, the football can be divided only so many ways. But if Phillips continues to be reliable, he should get his share. Right Guard 1. Jordan Roos 70 6-5, 301, Sr. (5) 2. Bearooz Yacoobi 50 6-5, 297, So. Right Tackle 1. Purdue settled on Matt McCann as its starting right tackle after a back-and-forth battle with Jalen Neal, a J.C. newcomer. Before camp started, Cameron Cermin was supposed to be in the mix too, but he only got first- team reps during the couple days Martesse Patterson was sidelined with a knee injury. McCann's a big body — a little too big at the start of camp, but he's lost 10 pounds since — who can be good in run-blocking but is a work in progress in pass protection. If it doesn't progress quickly, Neal could still work his way in. — Kyle Charters Free Safety 1. Navon Mosley 27 6-0, 181, Fr. None* 2. Robert Gregory 7 6-1, 231, Sr. (5) Cornerback 1.
