GOLD AND BLACK ILLUSTRATED VOLUME 27, ISSUE 1 27 cating." By the camp-closing jersey scrimmage, there was more than just good communication. The players knew what was expected and how to exe- cute it. Armed with that kind of knowledge, the first-team defense was able to perform at another level. "I thought we really progressed and became more physical throughout (camp)," senior defensive end Evan Panfil said. "That was really apparent toward the back end. I think guys just really got acclimated and comfort- able with the scheme, and started to be able to play at a really fast pace. The tempo really picked up and guys were really starting to shut down our offense a little bit, which was good." Terry Malone called his offense a "work in progress," knowing it's an ongoing process to develop the timing needed to run an efficient passing game in his West Coast scheme. Foremost, that's the relationship between quarterback and receivers, and Darrell Hazell didn't give David Blough all the first-team reps in training camp. Blough presumably will get them in the final two weeks leading into the game, and that should help. But it's not just about generating chemistry with the QB and pass-catchers: Purdue didn't have the same five offensive linemen working side-by-side during camp as it tried to figure out which player would play right tackle. And it only really worked on its run game during cer- tain periods of practices. Malone didn't feel truly comfort- able with that until camp's final week after a series of fourth-down and coming-out (of its own end zone) drills, he said. "It's a learning process," Malone said late in camp. "We're really working to become more consistent and achieve excellence on a daily basis. The guys are starting to rise." Part of that rise is consistently doing what's expected, whether it's completing passes at a high clip, lowering missed assignments at every position, locking up dou- ble-team blocks up front or finishing runs. Every step is a significant one in winning each prac- tice, first, and then more.
