A weekend work trip in
June to the Bahamas is
normal for Hank Kerfoot.
He is founder and president of
Modern Turf Inc. in Rembert,
S.C. Since its inception in 2000,
the company's guiding goal is
satisfying customer needs.
In this case, Kerfoot, 53, acted
after selling some Zorro Zoysia
to the Abaco Club on Winding
Bay in Marsh Harbor. The
Abaco Club features a Scottish-
style links design set hard by
the Atlantic Ocean and Sea of
Abaco. It is located 186 miles
east of Palm Beach, Fla.
"They needed someone to oversee
the installation of it," Kerfoot said.
"Once I recognized no one was
going to help me or stop me from
doing it, I just did it. It's a very
good thing I went down there."
STARTING A COMPANY
"I'm a former golf course
superintendent, and I've planted a
lot of grass," Kerfoot said. "I grew
up mowing lawns and caddying
and working on golf courses."
Other jobs included being a
cook, bank teller and bellman.
Kerfoot grew up in the Washington,
D.C., area and graduated from
Lake City (Fla.) Community
College with an associate degree
in golf course operations.
